This is an article written a few years ago that explains a little bit about me, my family and Wounded Knee.

About my family:

My father Jasper Spotted Elk was a paratrooper in the 11th airborne division in WWII. He made 2 jumps into enemy territory. He is buried at Wounded Knee cemetery near the east gate next to my brother Richard. His father, because of what he saw at the time, sort of went into hiding, a bit. He kept to himself. He joined the military and was an excellent horseman but unlike his father and grandfathers before him, he was very quiet. My brother Richard helped a lot of people on the rez. He started wood-cutting for the elders. He was one of the best hunters around and he provided for us. He was working on putting our family history together when a car took his life in 2003. My great great grandfather (also buried at Wounded Knee) was known as Chief Spotted Elk but unfortunately often remembered as Chief "Bigfoot". He and his people were killed at Wounded Knee in 1890. His wife and sons survived. One of his sons, Richard served as a scout and made a trip as part of a Sioux delegation. Chief Spotted Elk's father was Chief One Horn and his brothers were all Chiefs, as well. My great uncles are also recorded in history. Chief One Horn is best remembered by a painting by George Catlin. His father was Black Buffalo, also a chief, who is recorded in the Lewis and Clark journals in 1804.
